Training health workers and providing access to capacitybuilding resources to improve their knowledge and skills for FGM prevention and management of complications.

Research question 1: Among health workers providing care to women and girls living with any type of FGM or at risk of FGM, does training in approaches to FGM prevention and treatment of FGM-related complications, versus no or any intervention, lead to improvements in their knowledge, confidence, skills, attitudes, communication, education, outreach and clinical reporting, and implementation of quality and compassionate prevention and care services?

Research question 2: Among health workers providing care to women and girls living with any type of FGM or at risk of FGM, does provision of or improving access to capacity-building resources, including information, education and communication (IEC) materials and job aids (e.g. clinical guides, handbooks, algorithms, flow charts, anatomical models as well as other digital/print resources explaining the types of FGM, its complications and management), or a combination of capacity-building resources, versus no or any intervention, lead to improvements in their knowledge, confidence, skills, attitudes, communication, education, outreach and clinical reporting, and implementation of quality and compassionate prevention and care services?

Recommendation 2: In addition to training, health workers should have access to capacity-building resources including information, education and communication (IEC) materials and job aids, e.g. clinical guides, handbooks, algorithms, flow charts, anatomical models and other digital/print resources explaining the types of FGM, the associated complications and their management.

Focusing particularly on countries where there is a high prevalence of FGM.

Scaling up cost-effective, evidence-based strategies.
